Still Waters
You see that cup,
that one,
the one with the green handle?
You see it sitting there on its saucer,
the saucer my mother gave me?
I like drinking out of that one
and only that one.
It’s bigger than the others.
Yeah, I know,
it’s too big,
but it gives me somewhere to go.
It gives me room to get lost.
I think about jumping in to it.
Into the dark,
into the still waters
and feeling myself
sink.
It is so big
and so round,
it is as if I were drinking from a pond,
minus the lilies and toads.
I don’t know why I like it so much.
Maybe because it’s green,
or maybe because it’s the last of its kind.
All of the others broke a long long time ago.
